The Greatest Try
What we did
The Barbarians vs New Zealand, 1973. A sporting event that has always been remembered as That Game! That Try! Unfortunately, there was no well-placed photographer at the match to snap a close-up of this magic moment. Now, nearly 50 years on, Welsh artist Elin Siân Blake and the try scorer, rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards have worked closely together to capture this moment of sporting history.

Logo
What an absolute honor for us to work on this amazing project – this try is iconic, and it’s something we’ve all enjoyed watching over the years.
We were very keen to use a shape like a shield because we wanted to give it a nostalgic look similar to rugby blazer badges from back in the day. We purposely filled the shape with a large ‘G’, representing Gareth Edwards, and its size reflects how influential he was in that game. The copyright symbol is positioned to imitate the rugby ball being carried.
The two letter ‘T’s behind represent the playing field. The bottom ‘T’ has been rotated 180 degrees because when viewed with the top ‘T’, it looks like a set of rugby posts at either end of the field.
To complement the highly recognizable black and white of the Barbarians, we introduced blue, which is the colour of Gareth’s club, Cardiff. Our research revealed that it’s a tradition for Barbarian players to wear their club socks, making them easily recognizable while running around the pitch.
We used a sans-serif typeface for a modern feel. The animated version of the logo is very fast, fitting in with how the try was scored.

Stationery
We created a clean, modern and legible stationery pack to continue the brand journey. This stationery looks very professional which reinforces the quality of the item being sold.
Welcome Pack
The welcome pack is issued with every purchase. The folder includes a personalised letter from Gareth, an A4 signed print of the painting and a care card. The folder has a very clean exterior with a subtle spot UV of an enlarged section of the logo. The interior is completely covered by the painting which provides the user with real impact when opening the folder.
Lunch Programme
The 12-page lunch program for the 50th Anniversary presented a modern interpretation of the original. Elements such as the cover border, fonts, and certain page layouts were thoughtfully reused. The program featured a comprehensive content lineup, including the lunch menu, sponsors page, a personal message from Sir Gareth Edwards, and the team sheet from the iconic game. With over a thousand attendees at the dinner held at the Celtic Manor, a copy of the program was placed at every individual's seat. Additionally, we crafted a variety of animated graphics displayed on screens throughout the venue.
Clothing
One of the main sponsors of the 50th-anniversary lunch, Barbour, produced a small number of limited edition items of clothing, such as polo shirts, jumpers, and body warmers, featuring our logo to commemorate this special event.
Finbi Design exceeded expectations in creating The Greatest Try logo, website and associated materials. Their thoughtful approach perfectly captured our vision; a modern outcome without missing a nod to the past. Professional, efficient, and a pleasure to work with, which is why we continue to collaborate with them.

Film
What an amazing project to be involved in! Spending a full day with Gareth, his lovely wife Maureen, Elin Sian Blake, and the Salter family was truly incredible. There was no hesitation in calling on the services of A-Game Films to shoot this film. Mikey and his team were magnificent, creating a film with a narrative that perfectly captures both the story of the try and how the painting came about. Not only did we create the animated intro graphics and titles, but Mikey had us heavily involved from the outset in the creative direction of the film.
